I am a Person with a Disability

You are the reason we exist. The Arc Alliance has advocated with and for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) just like you for 60 years. You can count on us as the nation’s leading advocate for all people with I/DD and their families and the premier provider of the supports and services you want and need. You can depend on us to advance your interests in the public arena as well. We will work to create opportunities for your full inclusion in education, health, housing, employment and more

In August 2010, we pushed for “Rosa’s Law” in the U.S. Senate to replace the term “mental retardation” with “intellectual disability” in some areas of federal government. We know how powerful words can be and we believe it is important that people use “people first” language talking to you or about you. After all, you are a person, not a diagnosis. You can find out more about this and other public policy initiatives here.

But even more important than our public policy work are the resources we can provide. We want you and everyone who is important to you to have all of the tools necessary for you to become a self-advocate. Check out, for example, the Medicaid Reference Desk jointly developed with ArcLink, which presents practical information about the Medicaid program in a self-advocate friendly format.
